I sit down with Josiah Dykstra—a cybersecurity expert who spent nearly two decades at the NSA and has lived with type 1 diabetes for over 30 years—to explore what diabetes management looks like inside some of the most locked-down buildings in the world. Researchers are pushing the boundaries of noninvasive glucose monitoring—by looking to the brain. In this episode, I speak with Dr. Casey Halpern, founder and CEO of SynchNeuro, a startup developing a small wearable that sits behind the ear and reads brainwave activity (EEG) to track glucose levels. The device interprets electrical signals from the hypothalamus and other brain regions to detect shifts in glucose, stress, and metabolism in real time. Early testing suggests accuracy close to today’s CGMs—but without the needle. Dr. Halpern shares how this technology works, what’s next in development, and why brain-based monitoring could redefine the future of wearable health tech.

Before CGM data hit Apple Watches or official apps, Kate Farnsworth and a community of determined parents made it happen themselves. Labeled “helicopter parents” by companies Dexcom, they soldered devices, coded software, and launched Nightscout—the first way to view glucose data remotely. Kate went on to found the Looped Facebook group helping over 30,000 families build their own open-source insulin systems years before commercial AID pumps existed. In this episode, Kate shares how DIY innovation transformed her relationship with her daughter, pushed regulators like Health Canada to adapt, and ultimately led her to work inside medtech with Beta Bionics and Sequel MedTech (makers of the twiist pump). It’s the story of how passion, code, and community changed diabetes care forever.

Justin was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in May 2021 thanks to the diabetes community on Tik Tok.
Originally, misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Justin posted videos on Tik Tok of his symptoms and what his doctor had him doing at the time - testing blood sugar, taking long acting insulin - when the diabetes community found his videos, they blew up and they told him he had type 1, needed and Endocrinologist, a cgm and a pump. They got him the help he needed and I owes them his life.
